OUR FAVOURITE STOPS ALONG THE NORTH COAST 500. INSIDE SCOOP.

We are incredibly fortunate to not only be situated on the North Coast 500, but we also get to explore this incredible route year-round. We love hearing about our customers favourite stops and sharing ours with you. If you haven’t been on this “Always worth the journey route” we can honestly say you are missing out. We asked The Seaforth staff to put together a few of their favourite stops along the NC500 for you.

Let us take you on a journey. First stop of course is where we are situated. Our picturesque surroundings in the heart of Ullapool provide the perfect backdrop for delicious Scottish food. With a cosy fire and various seating areas you’ll be very happy soaking up the atmosphere of our beautiful village. Ullapool is situated in the beautiful Scottish Highlands surrounded by riverside and beach walks all within in a few minutes’ walk from The Seaforth. The sea front with its magnificent views is wonderful to walk along and watch the boats landing at Ullapool Harbour, the beach out to Rhue Point is a good afternoon or evening stroll and take in the sunset over the Summer Isles or walk the hill behind and look out to Ben Mor Coigach and over Ardmair.

Gairloch is one of my favourite stops. The drive between Ullapool and Gairloch is breath-taking and not to mention the spectacular sandy beaches and seal watching. As a Chef and Father, food and family friendly destinations are a factor on where to go. Gairloch have great family activities and a few family friendly restaurants or you could pack a picnic for the beach and try and spot a few dolphins. Highly recommend a visit.

I would have to say Gairloch is also my family’s favourite. Gairloch Caravan & Camping is perfectly situated on the North Coast 500 and is an ideal base for exploring Wester-Ross with kids. On your way from Ullapool you can stop at Inverewe Garden and Estate situated in Poolewe. A favourite in Gairloch would also be Hebridean Whale Cruises for families to enjoy whale watching and wildlife cruises. Hebridean waters contain an abundance of marine wildlife!

With so many fabulous destinations it is almost impossible to choose just one! So, I’m going to choose one I think everyone would enjoy, a place we love visiting. Smoo caves, Durness. This dramatic and spectacular sea cave is established in the limestone cliffs in Sutherland. The cave can be explored by path or by boat. The cave boasts one of the largest entrances to any sea cave in Britain at 50 ft high and is floodlit inside. It was shaped by a burn that runs down into the rear chamber, as well as erosion caused by the sea. For everyone’s bucket list.

One of the roads which often springs to mind when mentioning the North Coast 500 is the Bealach Na Ba. This winding, single-track road is in the Applecross Peninsula within Wester Ross and is often described as one of Scotland’s most spectacular drives. Having travelled along all the North Coast, I can honestly say the scenery is breath-taking. It’s like going back in time. Well worth the drive.

North Coast 500 is a popular 500-mile car route around the scenic North West Coast which passes Ardmair. Ardmair is located 3 miles north of Ullapool along the A835 road and one of my favourite places to sit and watch sunsets. We often grab a Seaforth Chippy and watch the magnificent sunsets from Ardmair beach.
